Gathering Background

Questions to address:

  1. Pick your cases - keeping in mind you will be connecting the two cases in your final paper. 
    • Make sure you have the complete citation:  Heart of Atlanta Motel, Inc. v. United States, 379 US 241 - Supreme Court 1964
    • If you are doing an issue:  companies that profited from slave trade, find 2 cases that reflect this issue.  
  2. Start with who what where when.
    • Who are the parties
    • Federal Case or State Case
    • What is the issue of the case(s)
    • Where did this take place
    • When did this take place (time period/date) THIS WILL INFORM YOUR TIMELINE

  • Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL
  • Academic Search Complete - Well-regarded scholarly database that is multi-disciplinary.
  • Alice Catalog - search for the case and/or the named parties.  Some of these are "landmark" cases; significant cases, frequently cited.
  • ArticlesPlus -  Can search by topics, words, people, places things, and find books, newspapers, videos, articles, etc.. Does not search everything the library has, but a good place to start.
  • Lexis/Nexis (Nexis Uni) Collection of full-text databases especially good for news, legal sources, and business.
  • Oxford African American Studies Center Collection of encyclopedias, biographical sketches, maps, images covering 16th century to the present.

Both cases should be presented in tables and on same page for comparison responding to all the questions.
