Sources of visual information & images
Below are some good places to start locating images; especially useful as they will go beyond a usual Google search and provide the 'provenance' of an image (where is it from - originally). The tabs for Primary Sources and Encyclopedias offer many primary images as well.
- Ad*AccessFrom Duke University; Over 7,000 U.S. and Canadian advertisements covering five product categories - Beauty and Hygiene, Radio, Television, Transportation, and World War II propaganda - dated between 1911 and 1955.
- LOC Digital Collections (Library of Congress)*provides free and open access through the Internet to written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, prints, maps, and sheet music that document the American experience.
- Life Photoarchive hosted by GoogleSearch millions of photographs from the LIFE photo archive, stretching from the 1750s to today. Most were never published and are now available for the first time through the joint work of LIFE and Google.
- New York Public Library's Digital Gallery*NYPL Digital Gallery provides free and open access to over 800,000 images digitized from the The New York Public Library's vast collections, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints, photographs and more.
