Activism

To understand what activism is, and what we know about what works.

Definitions

Activism: "A doctrine or practice that emphasizes direct vigorous action especially in support of or opposition to one side of a controversial issue." 

Civil Disobedience: "A refusal to obey governmental demand or commands especially as a nonviolent and usually collective means of forcing concessions from the government." 

Nonviolence: "Abstention from violence as a matter of principle." 

Political Participation: The act of taking part in a political cause or movement. Examples could be voting, running for office, or communicating with elected officials.  

Protest: "A complaint, objection, or display of unwillingness usually to an idea or a course of action."  

Resistance: "An organized effort by some portion of the civil population of a country to resist the legally established government or an occupying power and to disrupt civil order and stability." 

Social Movement: "Large, sometimes informal, groupings of individuals or organizations which focus on specific political or social issues."
