Major Databases for Music Journals
The databases listed below are the major sources for journal articles on all aspects of music. The contents of two of them—Music Index and RILM—are included in ArticlesPlus (on the first page of this Guide), but it may be more convenient to search them invidivually.
- International Index to Music Periodicals Full Text (IIMP)Indexes more than 400 scholarly and popular music journals, mostly beginning in 1996, although indexing for some titles goes back as far as 1874. Covers both classical music and all types of popular music, along with the music business, music education, music therapy, and other topics.
In terms of Music Performance, searches may be limited to reviews (selecting positive, negative, or no opinion reviews) or reviews may be excluded in searches.
Includes full text for around 140 titles; use LinkSource to look for full text for the others. - Music IndexCovers every aspect of the classical and popular worlds of music. With cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts for more than 480 periodicals, from 1970 to the present.
- RILM Abstracts of Music LiteratureInternational in scope, RILM covers articles in over 11,000 journals, many of which are not specifically devoted to music, from 1967 to the present. (The documentation of conference proceedings goes back to 1835, and further retrospective coverage is planned.)
Sound recordings and motion pictures that present the results of scholarly research or fieldwork are also included.
