Guidelines for Creating/Revising LibGuides

For OU librarians transitioning to LibGuides 2.

The Standard Box Type

LG1 has twenty-some types of content boxes to choose from. LG2 has only four-and three of them will probably be used sparingly, if at all, by most authors. The four box types in LG2 are: Standard, Tabbed, Gallery, and Profile.

Within the Standard box, you will find most of the types of content that are separate box types in LG1; see image on right. This means you can “mix and match” various kinds of content within a single box; you won't need to make a separate box for each different kind of content. This should allow for much greater versatility in page and box design than we have in LG1.

When you are logged in, you will see this little tool at the bottom right of each content segment:  This lets you edit the contents of that segment or delete the whole thing.

Copying and Pasting text content

This takes a little while to get used to, but isn’t really too onerous after you’ve done it a bit:

  1. Have your LG1 Guide open in one browser tab or window and the new LG2 Guide in another
  2. In LG1 select and copy a chunk of content. In the case of the general purpose Rich Text/HTML boxes (probably the most commonly used ones), choose the Plain-Text Editor tab and select and copy its contents. This ensures you will get all the content of the box.
  3. Paste the content into the appropriate Content Type in the Standard box in LG2. See list on right àààààààà
  4. As you are doing this, check each and every link you’ve made in LG1 to be sure it works. If it doesn’t work, either correct it or don’t include it in your LG2 Guide.
  5. Repeat until done!
